The concept of the new building of the Faculty of Applied Arts is based on the maximum fitting of the building into the historical core of the city and its distinctive ambience. Inserting the outside space (open atrium) into the very center of the building gradually introduces users to the space and opens up a number od different possibilities for using that space.
The central open space allows natural light and ventilation to enter all parts of the building. Uninterrupted visual contact with the outside space and greenery from the largest part of the building makes staying in it more humane and inspiring.
The wide covered outdoor staircase together with the multifunctional green atrium fully allow students to have their own outdoor space where they could be protected from the noise and intense traffic in Karađorđeva Street. This space represents support for the creation of a creative microenvironment for the work of the students themselves. Suitable for relaxation and gatherings, as a meeting place, exchange of ideas, work and outdoor exibitions.
The external facade is designed in stone because the purpose of the faculty should convey the solidity and clarity that stone as a material allows. On the full parts of the facade it is applied as a covering, while on the open window parts it appears in the form of thin elongated elements rhythmically arranged in a certain grid depending on the orientation, and in this sense it also represents protection from the sun.
Pedestrians have unimpeded access to the green roof of the faculty, which is designed as an unobtrusive extension of the pedestrian zone and is connected to the planned urban pedestrian matrix behind the building. From this position there are unobstructed views of the river and other parts of the city.
The aim of the relation of the new object to the environment is that neither its form nor its design disturbs the existing structure around it, while at the same time it fulfills all the needs of the significant functions that it unites. The idea of the new faculty building also aimed to bring citizens closer to the river in a humane way, without disrupting the existing ambient values of the environment, to contribute to the creation of new values and to make the space additionally alive and accessible.
